Joan Miro I Ferra was born on April 20, 1893 in Barcelona, Spain, to Michel Miro Adzerias and Dolors Ferra.
Joan was an innovative and prolific painter. From a young age he adapted surrealism, dada and color field styles of art to his own personal philosophy of visual aesthetics. In the early 1920s Joan moved to Paris to join a group of surrealist painters and poets, including Pablo Picasso and Salvadore Dali. Although the artist enjoyed the collaboration and took influence from his peers, he was not interested in the political movement associated with the group. Joan remained interested in images from early Catalan art, the influence of which can often be found in his work.
Joan Miro´s art took on many forms and styles during his long life. In 1956, Joan moved to his dream home and his wife´s birthplace, Palma de Mallorca. There he continued to draw and paint until his death. Throughout his life, Joan produced 2000 oil paintings, 500 sculptures, 400 ceramic objects, 5000 drawings and collages as well as numerous prints.
Joan Miro is survived by his wife, Pilar and his daughter Dolores. Condolences may be sent to the Fundacion Pilar y Joan Miro in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
